On Tuesday 16th May over 100 Companions from across the Province attended a Prostate Cancer Awareness Seminar organised by the Devonshire Royal Arch and hosted by the Grand Superintendent, Christopher Roach.
The presentation was made by Dr Leo Clarke and supported by Dr Peter Galli providing information about Prostate Cancer including symptoms, treatment, and support.
Professor Sarah Bailey, head of research at University of Exeter Medical School, also gave a very informative presentation about her research into new and ongoing developments in Prostate Cancer diagnosis. This is looking into new ways of non-intrusive and early diagnosis.
Men are notoriously silent when it comes to talking about Prostate Cancer, but three Companions bravely related their experience and treatment for Prostate cancer from diagnosis to recovery which sparked lively discussions.
Following on from the presentation, on behalf of Royal Arch Masons in Devonshire the Grand Superintendent presented Dr Sarah Bailey with a cheque for £10,000. Further donations were also made by Petitor Chapter and Chapter of Union. These donations will be used to further her research into Prostate Cancer diagnosis.
Prostate Cancer is a common cancer and starts in the cells of the Prostate which is a small gland located just below the bladder and in the front of the rectum.
The evening raised awareness of this all-important men’s health issue including the support available to anyone that is affected. If you think that you may be suffering from Prostate related issues, act NOW. Check your symptoms against the International Prostate Symptom Score Sheet and speak with your GP. You may get an indication of a potential problem by using the IPSS score card.
